I participated in the 2025 Inter-Base Collaboration Symposium in Okinawa.

I attended the COI-NEXT Symposium on Collaboration Among Hubs for Domains 3 and 4, held at Hotel Collective in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, under the theme “Transformation of People and Society Through Collaboration and Synergy Among Hubs: Co-Creating a Sustainable Future Society in Okinawa.”

At this symposium, guided by the future visions set forth by each COI-NEXT center, centers belonging to Domains 3 and 4 gathered in Okinawa to explore the potential for solving social issues through inter-center collaboration, with the aim of bringing about change in people, universities, and society.
Representatives from our office also gave a presentation on behalf of the Ogasawara Project Team regarding the “Bio-Community Hub Based on a Fully Circular Resource System Through Collaborative Creation in the Niigata Region, a Major Rice-Producing Area.”

Innovation cannot be achieved by universities alone; it is essential to build a system of industry-academia-government collaboration that involves a wide range of stakeholders. In the latter half of the event, a panel discussion was held with stakeholders from Okinawa. There was a lively exchange of views on how to revitalize the region by leveraging its tourism resources.

On the following day, the 27th, the venue moved to the Churaumi Aquarium, where the FY2025 COI-NEXT Cross-Center Young Researchers’ Colloquium was held.
On the way, we toured the land-based aquaculture demonstration area at the University of the Ryukyus. Hundreds of meibai (grouper) were being raised in a space about the size of a single tatami mat, and I was amazed by the power of land-based aquaculture technology.
During the first half of the event at the Churaumi Aquarium, seven oral presentations and 20 poster presentations were held in the Event Hall. Professors Yamazaki, Shida, Takimoto, and Nakamura from our center also presented their research on various topics and engaged in in-depth discussions with many participants.

After a break, a discussion session was held in front of the large aquarium during the second half of the event. It was a very meaningful opportunity to deepen our connections with researchers from other locations and expand our professional network.
I hear that next year's Inter-Center Collaboration Symposium will be held in Toyama.
