In preparation for its 50th anniversary in October 2026, Nagaoka University of Technology is working to create a “space for interaction” where students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community can gather casually to foster dialogue and multicultural exchange. This crowdfunding campaign is part of the “Modern Hundred Bags of Rice” project and aims to establish a hub for interaction that nurtures the next generation through the construction of a new cafeteria and the renovation of existing facilities.

As part of its “Program to Support the Creation of Spaces for Co-creation,” the COI-NEXT hub has placed a strong emphasis on creating spaces where diverse individuals can connect and new value can emerge. A snow cellar is a natural refrigerator that makes use of winter snow. In the snow cellar located on the campus of Nagaoka University of Technology, we have stored specially cultivated Koshihikari rice for more than six months and have been examining this “storage process” from a technical and scientific perspective.
