Research and Development Task 5: Held a tasting event for farmed fish.

On Monday, March 27, we held a tasting event for tilapia raised in a closed-loop land-based aquaculture tank installed on the campus of Nagaoka University of Technology.

In Research and Development Project 5, we installed a 5 m³ closed-loop land-based aquaculture tank on campus and raised tilapia, a freshwater fish, for approximately two years without water changes. In this experiment, we installed a Down-flow Hanging Sponge (DHS) system—which we had been researching as a wastewater treatment system for developing countries—at the top of the tank, conducted continuous treatment, and carried out the aquaculture.

At the tasting event, participating restaurants, food wholesalers, and food processors served the fish as sashimi and shabu-shabu, and lively discussions took place regarding the selection of farmed fish for sale—based on factors such as taste, quality, and ease of preparation—as well as future business developments.
